2026 Kia Sportage vs Kia Sorento

Comparison 2026 Kia Sorento vs Kia Sportage Crossover SUVs

The Kia Sportage and Kia Sorento obviously share Kia’s current design language, but how do they differ, and which one is best for your needs? The most obvious difference is size. While the Kia Sportage operates in the compact SUV class, the Kia Sorento is a midsize SUV with a longer body, an extended wheelbase, and the option of a third row. Both models are visually striking, undeniably contemporary SUVs that are packed with the latest features and technology. Here is a more detailed look at what sets these two excellent Kia SUVs apart.

When Size Matters

The size difference is clear in the numbers, and it directly affects how each vehicle is used. The Kia Sportage maximizes space within its smaller footprint, while the Kia Sorento adds flexibility, making excellent use of its extra length, and third row.

Specification Kia Sportage Kia Sorento
Seating Capacity 5 6–7
Front Legroom (mm) 1052 1052
Rear Legroom (mm) 1050 1041
Headroom Front (mm) 998 1024
Headroom Rear (mm) 998 998
Rear Cargo Volume (L) 1121 608
Cargo Volume Seats Folded (L) 2098 1996–2139
Overall Length (mm) 4660 4815
Wheelbase (mm) 2755 2815

The Kia Sportage has more cargo space available behind the second row because it doesn’t have a third row, which would be a dealbreaker for anyone who needs more than five seats. The Kia Sorento trades that space for added seating, then recovers overall capacity when the rear rows of seats are folded.

Engine and Performance

Both models use a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine. However, while all Kia Sportage trim levels use the same unit that produces 187 horsepower and 178 lb.-ft. of torque, the Kia Sorento offers a choice. The Kia Sorento uses the same engine architecture but increases output to 191 horsepower and 181 lb.-ft. in the standard version and 281 horsepower, and 311 lb.-ft. with a turbocharged option. Both vehicles send their power to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Although all Kia Sorentos are exclusively all-wheel drive, the Kia Sportage offers front-drive and AWD variants.

Fuel Economy

The Kia Sorento is bigger than the Kia Sportage, and the Sorento’s third-row seats mean it’s also heavier. And that obviously affects fuel economy. The Kia Sportage is rated at 9.3 L/100 km in the city, 7.0 L/100 km on the highway, and 8.3 L/100 km combined in front-drive form. AWD versions are rated at 9.9 L/100 km in the city, 7.8 L/100 km on the highway, and 8.9 L/100 km combined. The Kia Sorento is rated at 10.2 / 8.5 / 9.4 L/100 km for the EX trim level, and 11.5 / 8.7 / 10.3 L/100 km for the rest of the lineup. The Kia Sportage is more fuel-efficient, but if fuel economy is the driving force behind your buying decision, both models offer hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.

Features and Technology

The similarities continue to the interiors, with both the Kia Sportage and Kia Sorento employing wide digital displays that integrate the instrument cluster and infotainment system into a single panel. Despite its extra overall length, the Kia Sorento’s second-row legroom at 1,041mm is less than the 1,050mm in the Kia Sportage. Another slight advantage the Kia Sportage has over the Kia Sorento is the upholstery options. Both models have cloth, synthetic, and real leather upholstery options, but the Kia Sportage has six choices to the Kia Sorento’s four. That means you can have Carmine Red and Terracotta Brown quilted leather in the Kia Sportage, but not in the Kia Sorento.

Both vehicles offer very similar safety and driver-assist features. The standard equipment is excellent in both cases, with only some of the most advanced systems reserved for the higher trim levels. For example, you have to go to the Kia Sportage EX and Kia Sorento X-line to get Highway Drive Assist 1, and X-Line Limited trims of both vehicles to get Highway Drive Assist 2. If safety and driver-assist features are important in determining which vehicle to go for, there’s nothing in it between the Kia Sportage and Kia Sorento.

Which Kia SUV to Choose?

Realistically, the Kia Sportage and Kia Sorento are excellent SUVs that share many qualities but are aimed at different audiences. If you need six or seven seats, the Kia Sorento is more appropriate. That allows the Kia Sportage to be sportier, a little smaller, and more agile. And if you want red or brown quilted leather upholstery instead of something more subdued, the Kia Sportage is the only choice. However, both vehicles look fantastic and are superb at what they do. If you like what you see with the Kia Sportage, but you must have more than five seats, you certainly won’t be disappointed with the natural progression to the three-row Kia Sorento.
