Kia Canada Partners with Variablegrid to Advance Home EV Charging Solutions
Kia Canada has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Variablegrid Adaptive Power Inc., a Canadian leader in electric vehicle (EV) energy management technology. This collaboration makes Kia the first automotive brand in Canada to work with Variablegrid, reinforcing its commitment to EV accessibility and innovation for Canadian drivers.
Making EV Charging More Accessible
One of the biggest challenges for EV adoption in Canada is home charging—particularly in older homes with limited electrical capacity. Traditional Level 2 EV chargers often require costly electrical panel upgrades, sometimes ranging from $5,000 to over $10,000. Variablegrid’s patented adaptive load management system, powered by artificial intelligence, eliminates this barrier by monitoring real-time household energy usage and dynamically adjusting charging power.
This means Kia EV owners can enjoy fast, reliable charging without expensive upgrades—making EV ownership simpler, more affordable, and more accessible across Canada.
A Smarter Home Charging Experience
“Kia Canada is committed to making electric vehicles accessible and affordable for all Canadians,” says David Sherrard, Director of Strategic Planning at Kia Canada. “Our partnership with Variablegrid removes cost and infrastructure barriers that prevent many households from installing home EV chargers.”
Variablegrid’s Energy Management System (EMS) allows charging speeds to automatically adapt to a home’s available capacity. Customers purchasing Kia EVs can also include the cost of the EMS and charger in their vehicle financing, streamlining the process and offering a complete EV charging solution right from the dealership.
Supporting Canada’s Transition to Electric Mobility
“One of the top reasons people hesitate to buy an EV is uncertainty about home charging,” says Dan Lafferty, CEO and co-founder of Variablegrid. “By bundling smart charging, intelligent power management, and financing options, Kia and Variablegrid are making the EV transition seamless.”
This initiative aligns with Kia’s expanding EV portfolio, which includes the upcoming Canadian-exclusive EV5 SUV and the anticipated EV4 compact sedan. Together with Variablegrid, Kia is ensuring Canadians can transition to electric mobility with confidence and convenience.
The Variablegrid EMS and home chargers are now available for purchase at Kia dealerships nationwide and can also be added when configuring vehicles online at Kia.ca.
